The Supreme Committee for People’s Assembly Elections in Syria has projected the timeline for completing its tasks to be between two to three months.

This was announced during a meeting held by the committee on the evening of Tuesday, June 17, at the People’s Assembly building in Damascus.

The committee discussed, according to the official SANA news agency, the conditions and criteria required for members of the subcommittees at the provincial level and the members of the electoral bodies.

A timetable for the committee’s work phases was set, starting from the tasks assigned to it by the decision of its formation, leading up to the completion of the electoral entitlement in accordance with legal and constitutional principles.

During the meeting, a schedule for field visits to several provinces was also established, aimed at discussing the electoral process with official bodies and civil organizations, and completing preparations for the electoral process efficiently and transparently.

Formation of the committee

The Syrian president during the transitional period, Ahmed al-Sharaa, issued Decree No. “66” for the year 2025, which included the formation of a committee called the “Supreme Committee for People’s Assembly Elections” on June 13.

The decree stated that the formation of the committee came based on the provisions of the constitutional declaration, particularly Article “24” thereof, and in belief of activating the legislative authority as a fundamental pillar for building the state with its full powers.

The decree tasked the formation of a committee called the “Supreme Committee for People’s Assembly Elections,” consisting of:

• Lara Shaher Aizouki: Member
• Nawar Elias Najma: Member
• Muhammad Ali Muhammad Yassin: Member

• Muhammad Yasser Kahhala: Member
• Hanan Ibrahim al-Balkhi: Member
• Badr al-Jamous: Member
• Anas al-Abda: Member

The decree stipulated that the Supreme Committee should supervise the formation of electoral sub-bodies, which will elect two-thirds of the members of the People’s Assembly, while one-third of the members will be appointed by the President of the Republic.

The decree defined the number of members of the People’s Assembly to be 150 members, distributed according to the population in the governorates, in accordance with the categories of dignitaries and intellectuals, and according to conditions set by the High Election Committee, distributed among the provinces as follows:

• Aleppo: 20 seats
• Damascus: 11 seats
• Rural Damascus: 10 seats
• Homs: 9 seats
• Hama: 8 seats
• Latakia: 6 seats
• Tartus: 5 seats
• Idlib: 7 seats
• Deir Ezzor: 6 seats
• Al-Hasakah: 6 seats
• Raqqa: 3 seats
• Daraa: 4 seats
• As-Suwayda: 3 seats
• Quneitra: 2 seats

The UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, met with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani, on May 23 in Damascus, where they discussed the anticipated formation of the People’s Assembly and international engagement.
